What if I told you that I lost my entire immediate family in a matter of only seven years? Would you believe me? What if I also told you that I am not the only one who has suffered? Over my journey, I have encountered countless people who have all had a story to share but no one who will listen to them—I'm here to put an end to that.
It all started when I just turned 19. My dad died tragically from cancer just two weeks after my birthday. He was the first loss that my family had ever experienced. Who would have known that only a year and a half later, my only sibling would also die tragically from an accidental overdose of fentanyl in December 2015? Four months after my brother's passing, my uncle, whom my dad and I were closest to, killed himself in April 2016. Ten months later, my grandmother, the heart of the Lestelle family, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in February 2017. Shortly before my grandmother passed, my mother was diagnosed with a rare, noncurable cancer. She fought for four years before she passed away in March 2021. These losses were only the beginning of my journey.
Good Grief, Jessi is a podcast that I created to share my struggles, triumphs, and failures while dealing with the loss of my family while overcoming anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Though it may feel like it at most times, I am not alone in these struggles. During the series, I discuss my personal experiences with death, the loss of a loved one, grief, anxiety, depression, and PTSD while inviting special guests to talk about their expertise in the grief world. You never know, you might even laugh a little!
